Indie-pop Duo Bora York Shares ‘Smoke,’ The New Song From Their Upcoming Album Emotion Vertigo

American indie-pop duo Bora York have released their new single ‘Smoke’ via Anthem Falls Music on 4 October. The track features bassist Ian Allison (touring bassist for Eric Hutchinson, Jeremy Messersmith) and was mastered by Darren Vermaas (The National, Mumford and Sons, Vampire Weekend). This indie gem is from their album Emotion Vertigo, which we wait for eagerly. The album is due for release November 8th. Their previous single ‘Colorado’ was well received, and this track is o different. After ‘Colorado’ premiered on CLASH Magazine it reached #1 on Soundcloud’s New & hot: Indie playlist, and they have garnered so much support from the likes of Interview Magazine, Earmilk, PopMatters, Indie Shuffle and so many more, that we can’t wait to see ‘Smoke’ enjoying similar success.

Husband and wife duo, Chris and Rebekah Bartels, cite inspiration from Toro y Moi, J. Views, Tame Impala, Night Moves, Bon Iver, Novo Amor and Tourist. Bora York’s has been comared to the likes of Chelsea Cutler and Kygo.

‘Smoke’ is based on the idea of moving forward. Chris and Rebekah explain the track: “There’s nothing like the feeling of being free like a road trip, and that’s the setting with this song. “No more anthems, and no more embers, no more questions, till we live surrendered” – this encompasses the idea of leaving the past, or worries, or regrets, behind. The good, the bad, the doubts – leaving it all behind for something new, something fresh.

Singer/songwriter Starley releases a new song ‘Lovers + Strangers’

Marking a new era for the talented Australian singer, today Starley releases her vibrant new single ‘Lovers + Strangers’ on Central Station Records. The captivating record (produced by Swedish duo NOTD and mixed by Tom Norris, famous for his work on Zedd ‘The Middle’ & Katy Perry’s ‘Never Really Over’) addresses the disconnect that can be felt as a long-standing relationship comes to a natural end, whilst sonically, Starley’s rich melodies shine through on what is a grand return to the upbeat electro-pop summer vibes for which she’s become known and adored

“It’s funny how as a kid, you picture the most perfect world for yourself as a grown-up. Thinking you’ll do all the right things when you fall in love. Then life happens and all the uncertainty that comes with it. And then one person who knows you better than anyone else, your lover and best friend, suddenly isn’t any longer; you wanna reach out to say hey, but you can’t because that would break the rules… You both have separate lives to lead. I guess we’re supposed to be strangers now…” – Starley

Having already graced the stage alongside the likes of Katy Perry, Cher, and Clean Bandit, it’s hard to believe it’s only been a few short years since the release of her debut hit single ‘Call On Me’. Starley poured herself into writing the single when she felt all was lost – but it was this brutal honesty that resonated with millions of fans around the globe, bringing people together in sharing their own difficult times, and is clearly a huge part of her songwriting success to date. With the release of the Ryan Riback remix, the single went on to reach 1 billion streams across platforms, earning her 4x platinum in Australia, and platinum records across North America, UK, Europe, and Asia.

Continuing to write from the heart, Starley has gone on to release ‘Love Is Love’ – a powerful song championing acceptance and equality, ‘Touch Me’, ‘Signs’, ‘Been Meaning To Tell You’, and a collaboration with Showtek, MOTi and Wyclef Jean on the reggaeton inspired ‘Down Easy’.

Singer/songwriter Malka releases a new music video for the song ‘Taking It Back’

Scottish singer and multi-instrumentalist MALKA has released the video for her brand new single ‘Taking It Back’. The video premiered in conjunction with World Mental Health Day and The Skinny who said about the single, “It’s a head-on confrontation with her struggles with anxiety, all wrapped up in a warm shimmer of uplifting of drums and synths as Schlesinger defiantly sings: ‘My love, I never give in / I’m taking it back, I’m taking it / My love, I never gave in / I’m taking it back, I’m taking it’.”

Chris Hawkins championed ‘Taking It Back’ on his BBC 6Music show this morning calling it, “[the] best song of the day”. It joins the already great support for MALKA at BBC 6Music, which has seen Amy Lame say, “It’s absolutely beautiful stuff… I’m a big fan,” when she played the track out on her show. Lauren Laverne is also a big fan of MALKA at the station. Paul Savage (Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, King Creosote) produced the song, which finds MALKA’s spellbinding voice dancing over a dark bass-laden dream-pop landscape as she celebrates the overcoming of personal fears. The video is a reflection of this and captures children lending each other support to whatever might be haunting them in the woodland.

Regarding the video, MALKA says, “The video was directed by my long-time collaborator Lee Bamsey and playfully deals with themes of overcoming fear, anxiety and complex relationships by pitting predator against prey. It also happens to star both mine and Lee’s children.” Continuing about the single she says, “’Taking It Back’ was written about overcoming personal demons and not letting fear get the better of you. Over the years there have been moments in my life that have seemed so overwhelming, but I have started to feel like I am able to take control of those moments.” ‘Taking It Back’ is the first taste of new music to be taken from her forthcoming third album due for release early next year. More details on the album and live dates will be announced soon.
