Electronic jazz musician SENU share ‘Jetlag’ song

Today, Friday 21st May 2021 sees the release of Jetlag– the debut album from SENU

The release of ‘Jetlag’ will be celebrated with a launch show, ‘Jetlag’ performed in its entirety, filmed live at Fuel HQ in Dublin, to be streamed on Nialler9’s YouTube channel at 8pm on Friday 21st May.

In addition, MCD has announced that tickets for SENU’s headline show at The Grand Social on 22nd February 2022 will go on sale today at 9am via Ticketmaster

Over the past year producer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Killeen has been releasing his original music under the moniker SENU, a vehicle for his unique blend of electronic beats, jazz and hip-hop. Today, he releases ‘Jetlag’ – the debut album from SENU

A sprawling electronic soundscape documenting a journey from Ireland to New York and back again, this is an album borne out of experimentation in more ways than one. Frustrated by insomnia, Sam challenged himself to write and record an album in one day. ‘Jetlag’ is the result of this experiment.

“Jetlag, as a whole, is about an experience meeting one of my musical idols, Evan Marien. I ended up staying in New York with him for a week and on return to Ireland I was overwhelmed with sleep deprivation, so I decided to challenge myself by attempting to write a full album in one night. This album is the result,” says SENU of the album’s origins.

As Nialler9 wrote in 2018: “If you’re well versed in the Irish music scene, you’ve probably tripped across Sam Killeen before.” Sam is well known for his work as a professional guitarist and musical director, having worked with the likes of James Vincent McMorrow, The Divine Comedy, Lisa Hannigan, Villagers, Loah, Bantum and more. Recently, he conducted strings for The Scratch’s album anniversary show (watch here). With his original music, he has supported acts such as Mark Guiliana, Cory Wong and the aforementioned Evan Marien.

Sam says: “As a session musician, my job usually involves writing and performing parts to music that specifically suits someone else’s style, whatever the genre may be. SENU became a place where I could push my boundaries creatively using the styles I love the most: electronic, jazz & hip hop music.”

While SENU is a vehicle for Sam to express his individual style, he is quick to credit the guest vocalists on the album with adding a new dimension to it. “Having Jamel Franklin [of Shy Mascot] and Caoi De Barra [of Wyvern Lingo] write on the album really lifted the music from its prior instrumental state,” he says. “Lyrics have been a great input to the music by the additional dialogue creating a space and image to the song. Both Caoi and Jamel have a unique energy and it was a real joy creating music with them.”

The Other Loversees Little Dragon team up with Ghanaian American vocalist/songwriter Moses Sumney—who released his widely acclaimed double-album “græ” earlier this year—with a track that showcases his unmistakable voice alongside the equally inimitable Yukimi Nagano, the two vocalists intertwined over a gently unfolding swirl of synthesisers, horns, and stripped-back percussion.

The track draws it’s lyrics from Little Dragon’s ‘Another Lover’ taken from their latest album, New Me, Same Us”, released earlier this year on Ninja Tune and lauded by the likes of the New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Mixmag, Crack Magazine and many more. Entirely self-produced and recorded at the pioneering Swedish band’s studio, New Me, Same Us”  saw the band go back to basics, falling back in love with their instruments: drums, bass, keyboards, harp, guitar and voice, to produce some of their most focused and best music to date. The album hit #5 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart in the US, with Mixmag calling it “a futuristic record bursting with lush textures and elevated by lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s sublime vocals” and The Guardian finding them on “on deliciously soulful form”.

The band’s hugely popular and highly regarded live performances have spawned a decade-spanning touring career, including festival highlights such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Bestival, Sonar, All Points East, Dimensions Festival, Parklife, Lovebox, Love Saves The Day, Melt and Dour; co-headlining the Hollywood Bowl and Berkeley’s Greek Theatre with Flying Lotus supported by BADBADNOTGOOD and sold out two nights at London’s Roundhouse. While the global pandemic has put touring on hold, the band joined NPR Music for an intimate Tiny Desk (Home) Concert filmed at their long-term home-built studio in Gothenburg, Sweden—watch that here.

Music producer Souvlaki shares his latest electronica masterpiece, song ‘7LUNGS’

After his “Tracks” EP, some singles and collaborations that led the way in his artistic production, Souvlaki announces the release of “Continued Survival”, his second EP, anticipated by the launch of the single “7LUNGS”. The track combines the electronic and ambient sounds that have already become the Italian artist’s trademark with hip-hop and drum&bass influences, in a hybrid between soft atmospheres and grooving rhythm. Slim Gong lends his voice for some top notch hip-hop phrasing in French, adding another layer and a new contamination to a multifaceted and experimental track, which yet gets to sound spontaneous and balanced. Souvlaki, who sinks his musical roots into the solid ground of electronics, ambient and alternative, does not hide his natural will to experiment and push himself into new territories. His creative process reveals his curious and attentive personality.

In his words: “I like ‘7LUNGS’ a lot in terms of writing, but I admit that it was difficult to finish. I wanted to create another “hip-hop” song like “Fellow”, which I published earlier. But the first version of ‘7LUNGS’ could not fit in the sound of the record, it had a nice modern tone but too far from the rest, I was one step away from removing it from the EP. Then fortunately, I was able to find what I was looking for and from there, I built the ending (the drum&bass beat was created by Simone Piccinelli, with whom I collaborated). Dark, obsessive, distorted, a bit as if the song wrecked towards the real sound of the EP. The song still sounded unfinished, a nice base but without the decisive hook. Again, through Simone, I got in touch with Slim Gong and then all the pieces of the puzzle fit together perfectly. His contribution, in French, is probably what makes this song the most complete on the record in my opinion”.

“7 Lungs” is available on all major digital platforms

“Continued Survival” EP, produced by Souvlaki and Simone Piccinelli at La Buca Recording Club and mastered at Woodpecker Mastering will contain 6 unreleased tracks, including the single proposed here and will be officially released on January 15th.

September 11, 2020 Music producer Ka Fu releases anticipated song ‘The Hope Is Open’

Music producer Ka Fu releases anticipated song ‘The Hope Is Open’

It is official release day for global nomad and music producer Ka Fu, who has just dropped a new single, ‘The Hope Is Open’. This new offering adds to the anticipation of the music producer’s upcoming album Heretic (October 2020), his second album release to date.

Wave Music share, “‘The Hope Is Open’ feels like a light wave that is crashing over you at the same time, Ka Fu’s music is like dynamite waiting to explode.”

Ka Fu adds his thoughts, “This track is about the neverending path of finding your own home. Everyone was born somewhere and that is our physical home but still, our soul is always in search of the place to be connected with. My experience is that it’s all about my internal world and not the pictures around it. For instance, if I’m ready to open my heart to everyone I meet on my way, accepting people as they are without any fears, means that my home is open and it’s everywhere I go. I tried to compose the track as deeply as possible with big bass lines that then are overflowed with another bass elements – all to create the floating feeling of calmness and inspiration at the same time, like in my life – I’m always interested in what comes next.”
