Q&A with dynamic experimental musician Frank Cogliano

Brooklyn based musician Frank Cogliano recently shared his delightfully eclectic and experimental album Computers of the World. Comprised of 17 vibrant tracks, each song has its own unique flair to them. Incorporating downtempo notes, electronica, and ambient sound effects of busy streets and spaces, one can easily lose themselves in this vibrant sound fusion. Previously forming part of R&B band Sugarbad as their guitarist, the producer wanted to explore his abstract music production further, and the result is breathtaking. We asked music producer Frank Cogliano a few questions about his artistry below.

What are some of your earliest memories of music?

My parents always had music playing when I was growing up; the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, Nirvana.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

Usually, I hear ideas and sing them into my iPhone. But also, particularly for Computers of the World, each track started with a sample and I built the track around that

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

Studio work, because I have complete control over the end product.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

Whenever anybody responds positively to any of my music it is a good thing. It happens sometimes.

If you could put together a radio show, what kind of music would you play?

I post short videos with music I like every day on my Twitter, so probably along those lines.

Singer Lauren L’aimant shares electronic album ‘Motions’

Having spent the past couple of years collaborating with some of electronic music’s finest producers and carving out a path of her own, Lauren L’aimant can now reveal her debut EP ‘Motions’ via her own label, The Loved Ones.

Lauren’s own productions and writing style ticks the boxes of many genres, and yet seem to be original in their sound, using vintage and modern synths for an electronic edge, combined with the timeless sound of the piano, which Lauren fell in love with and learnt to play by ear as a kid. Her aim has always been to create music that takes the listener on an emotional journey.

Speaking from experience with every song written, Lauren’s words are relatable and healing, gelling cohesively with the soulful and heartfelt sounds she selects to craft each song.

Speaking on the EP as a whole, Lauren recalls “‘Motions’ is a body of work that has been in production for over four years, and it finally feels like the right time to put it out into the world. Each song represents a particular moment within my relationships; the one that I missed out on. The one where I was consumed by lust. The one where I accepted the other person for who they truly are. The one where I took the burden. The one where it all ended. The one where I lost my brother. When I listen to these songs, I’m transported back to those times, and I think about every motion and every [e]motion I went through at that time. As always, it’s cathartic, and allows me to reflect on how far I’ve come, not only as a musician, but as a human being.”

Waveshaper shares striking video for ‘The Phantom Machine (Film Edit)’

Waveshaper has shared the video for ‘The Phantom Machine (Film Edit)’ The track is an extended version for the upcoming short film The Phantom Machine directed by Jendo Shabo, of Helios Films, while the original track is lifted from his album Mainframe – released earlier this year and comprised of 8 spellbinding synthwave offerings.

‘The Phantom Machine (Film Edit)’ is well suited to a science fiction horror story soundtrack, and renders its own story through its undulating instrumentals and accelerating tempo.

The video is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where a brave traveller meets the malicious Phantom Machine in a video-game-like battle, complete with striking futuristic visuals.

A comment on the Youtube video by Dave M. sums it up perfectly: “This is what all of us secretly imagine when listening to retrowave.”

Listen to Ubisoft’s Far Cry® 6 COMPLETE MUSIC (Original Game Soundtrack) by Pedro Bromfman

The complete soundtrack for Ubisoft’s Far Cry® 6 has hit the airwaves and is sure to not only delight gamers but music fans too. Scored by award-winning composer and producer Pedro Bromfman, the soundtrack is an emotional journey that takes place alongside revolution and guerilla warfare.

The game centres around the fictional island of Yara, which must be liberated from villain Antón Castillo (Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito) and his son Diego. Players take up the persona of Dani Rojas, a local military dropout, who tries to escape the island but ends up joining the revolutionary group Libertad.

With a collective play count of nearly 20 million streams, Pedro Bromfman has a trail of awards in his wake and also recently scored the feature film The Blackout.

Speaking of the album Bromfman explains: “Composing the music for Far Cry® 6 has been a tremendously rewarding experience! We set out to create a very modern score, drenched in lush soundscapes, driving percussion, processed organic instruments and a ton of synthesizers. We knew we needed to capture the soul of Yara, and its characters, by rooting the score on traditional Latin American and Caribbean music, while being completely free to experiment with contemporary sounds, elements and techniques, in hopes of creating something very fresh and unique.
