August 20, 2021 Review: synthpop duo At 1980 create nostalgia for time past

Review: synthpop duo At 1980 create nostalgia for time past

Atmospheric and lighthearted are some of the words that can be used to describe the synthpop band At 1980’s new album Late Night Calls via NewRetroWave. This duo consists of pals Adrian Quesada Michelena and Josh Dally, who have said that the ‘80s will never stop being influential to their sound. They have cited names like Bryan Adams and The Midnight as huge inspirations to the music they create today. The vocals somewhat call to mind a radiant and younger Bryan Adams, maybe this could be the re-incarnation of the man himself?

With track names like ‘Maria’, ‘California Nights’ and ‘We Were on Fire’ we can already sum up that this album has substance and will add value to any playlist that is open to explore an undiscovered love for the ‘80s for some and may just leave others thinking back to simpler times in their life. The album theme of having a lust for life runs through each track like clockwork, whether it’s the sentimental lyrics of ‘We Were on Fire’ or the more upbeat tone ‘Nothing Left To Say’. This album will be a hit amongst those who love ‘80s adventure films in which the hero wins in the end.

Each song on this album is as good as the next, but ‘We Were on Fire’ leaves us feeling as soft as putty. You cannot help but daydream, as you think back to your days as an adolescent and all the adventures that you joined in on with your mates – some memories may make you feel giddy and perhaps cringe for a few seconds. But then you think about all the fun that was had and within an instant, you feel appreciative for those times.

May 21, 2021 DJ Wax Tailor keeps it moving and grooving in hip hop remix

DJ Wax Tailor keeps it moving and grooving in hip hop remix

Back in 2019, the world of trip-hop began to stir as Wax Tailor released the disturbingly captivating single, The Light and murmurs of more releases began to arise. Early 2020 the producer released the unmistakable single, Keep It Movin featuring D Smoke, the winner of Netflix’sRhythm + Flow” competition. The release of ‘Keep It Movin’ came at a dark time, as the pandemic set in and the world was confronted with the truth of police brutality in a harsh yet undeniable way. However, the upbeat, anthemic nature of the song managed to set a tone of hope and acknowledgement that we are in control of our own destiny while the accompanying funky music video provided some much-needed relief.

The releases for Wax Tailor continued as he built towards his album, Shadow Of Our Suns which was released at the start of this year. The album showcased the vocals of numerous talented artists including Mark Lanegan in the rock-infused ‘Just A Candle’, Rosemary Standley the melancholic ‘Misery’ and Adeline in the mind-bending ‘Deja Vu’. You can read our full feature on the album here. The producer took time to introduce each of the artists on his socials and highlighting the reasons he chose to work with them.

This year, Wax Tailor continues to provide the world with new music, returning to and reworking his own sound into something new. The first of these remixes was our favourite – as he took on ‘Keep It Movin’ and reworked it, keeping a focus on the talented D Smoke’s vocals while infusing it with a bit more of Wax Tailor’s signature sound. Next, came the remixes for Everybody, originally featuring Del The Funky Homosapien and eventually receiving a remix from South African artist Kanif The Jhatmaster as well as Wax Tailor himself.

November 4, 2020 Listen to ‘The Best Part’ of the year with Cadet Carter’s latest song

Listen to ‘The Best Part’ of the year with Cadet Carter’s latest song

Pause and consider “The Best Part” of the year with Cadet Carter and their newly premiered single. Due for release on the 13th of November via 8 Ohm Records, ‘The Best Part’ displays the indie-rock quartet’s talent for looking on the bright side of life.

Speaking of the single, Cadet Carter tells us: “The world is full of pessimists, especially since the start of the pandemic. And I’ll admit, I‘m a pessimist myself pretty much most of the time. But right now, nobody seems to keep the light on at the end of the tunnel, no one seems to be willing to fly the flag of optimism. So we decided to write a song about not losing hope and staying positive, just for a change. That is how ‘The Best Part’ came about.”

A step away from songs such as ‘King Of Pain’ and ‘A Bad Few Weeks’, we’re pretty happy with the positive direction the band is going in and we believe the rest of the world will be too? Tell your local radio stations about them today to make sure everyone gets a bit of sunshine in their life.
