Five minutes with Soul Gem, the genre defying musician

New York-based Soul Gem has released his latest single, ‘Miles Away’ in collaboration with Norweigan duo Kasket Club. ‘Miles Away’ was released with a B-side, ‘Self Control’ via Uppwind Records on 24 January. While ‘Miles Away’ has already received significant recognition with its upbeat and modern take on indie disco meets French house, it was ‘Self Control’ that stood out for us, with its soothing and organic sounds.

Working as part of a collaboration is something that Soul Gem has great experience with, having paired up with Norwegian rapper and producer Pasha. The two toured the world together, collecting millions of plays and exploring their own musical horizons. Pasha and Kasket Club fall into vastly different genres, the one embracing hip hop and the other chillwave.

Naturally, we were keen to discover more about Soul Gem and his ability to produce catchy songs in so many genres.

What are some of your earliest memories of music?

Playing the drums to troopers by Iron Maiden

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

I usually start with playing piano/synth and try to come up with a cool chord progression. After that, I normally go straight to the microphone and jam out different vocal ideas. From there, I just keep building the track with more sounds.

‘Self Control’ reveals a more organic sound than ‘Miles Away’ with its electronic embellishments. Which direction would you personally like to move towards, as a producer?

I think ‘Miles Away’ is a more interesting path, most of the time. The type of energy that ‘Self Control’ represents is something that doesn’t happen that often when creating in the studio. I have to feel a certain way, and normally I prefer more positive tones 🙂

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

Creating music.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

I can’t remember a specific response, but in general that I made someone’s day 🙂

If you could put together a radio show, what kind of music would you play?

House, Indie, funk

Name five artists and their albums who would appear on your radio show

  1. Earth, Wind and Fire
  2. Washed Out
  3. Toro Y Moi
  4. Parcels
  5. Jungle

You previously worked alongside Norweigan rapper Pasha before collaborating with Kasket Club on ‘Miles Away’ and ‘Self Control’. What are some of the most striking differences when working with these musicians?

Just the different energy they bring to the room. Also, with Kasket Club it’s more about producing and creating the whole song, while with Pasha it’s usually more about the vocals and getting ideas around that.

What would you like to achieve with your music? What does success look like to you?

Success to me is just having fun with it. My long term goal is to create more music for commercials/movies. Would also love to collaborate with different artists from around the world.

One last thought to leave your fans with?

Thank you 💛

Few people know the struggle of disliking your own creations better than artists. However, it can be an amazing feeling when the dislike begins to change and reform itself into love and favouritism. Ilja Alexander knows this better than most with his last release of ‘Someday’ via Green Monk Records.

Stream/Download : ‘Someday’

“I wrote ‘Someday’ on a piano and it sounded like an indie sound. My good friends and co-producers, Curtis Richardson and Adien Lewis, then decided to take me out of my comfort zone, and on the morning of the studio recordings presented to me the electronic urban pop production of the song. I was totally unconnected to the sounds and so discomforted and vexed by the production that I just couldn’t sing on the production for the first two hours. Luckily, I soon came to like the production. In fact, I now think it is one of my most favoured recorded songs so far.”

Somewhat of an international artist, Ilja Alexander is originally from Amsterdam. However, he has recently formed a band in London and received significant attention from Japan and Indonesia.

Music duo rosecoloredworld release music video for ‘Walking on the Sun’

LA-based pop duo, rosecoloredworld, continue to take on the Sunset Strip with the release of their debut single’s music video “Walking on the Sun.” Addison Scott and RAE merge their real-life romance with mystical energies to throw a tea party complete with rainbow lollipops, giant sunglasses, glam trimmings and FUN without any of the pretension.

rosecoloredworld did right by their namesake and mission statement in their debut music video. Their energetic vocals and funk-filled beats parallel the video exactly and tell the story of who rosecoloredworld is and what they’re about. The video plays out like a Friday night party that just happened to be caught on film because for the most part, it was. The band invited their friends and family to take part in the video in order to allow for a genuine glimpse into their rose-coloured world and those who helped them create it.

The couple’s unwavering positivity is heard in the single and they wanted the video to be a visual representation of that as well. With the help of a local artist, Jim Budman, who immediately understood their vision, they were able to turn their fantasy into reality. Budman opened his Venice studio to rosecoloredworld and their family to host the psychedelic kickback where they were about to express their radical energy and welcome all who listen to join their rose-coloured world.

Born out of two burgeoning solo careers on parallel tracks, Addison and RAE met at a show while both wearing rose-colored glasses on the night that Tom Petty passed away. Although music came first, their undeniable chemistry brought them together romantically as well. Addison has adopted RAE’s spiritual calling to help the homeless, raise money for Children’s Miracle Network, and speaking at schools to promote kindness, respect, and love. This is the foundation rosecoloredworld was built on and will be a reoccurring theme throughout their upcoming release. rosecoloredworld will be taking part in Sofar Sounds in NYC on December 2nd.

Russian musician Vincent Barrea reveals dynamic music video

Russian vocalist and producer Vincent Barrea has just released his latest track, ‘Chemical Or Love’ on 31 October via Maitre Music. Fast on its tail came the music video, already amassing hundreds of thousands of views within the few weeks of its release.

In an interview on E-D-M, Barrea described the difficult filming process that was behind the impactful video however, he makes it clear that he always had complete confidence in his director. “I completely trust Tata, if she believes that it is necessary to do this, I am ready to freeze, burn in the fire, swim across the Lamansh, rob a bank, walk on a tightrope between skyscrapers, anything for her. Moreover, they are always clearly responsible for safety on the set, so I was totally calm.” You can read the full interview here

We’re comforted by the idea that Barrea displayed such trust in Tata Belinina as the results simply would not be the same without her high-risk ideas. Almost battling the elements, both fire and water are proudly displayed, mirroring the internal conflict that drives the track. We’re looking forward to seeing what Barrea and Belinina think up for their next collaboration.
