Alt-pop artist PRIESTESS releases debut EP, unveils ‘Hooks’ video

On November 25th, PRIESTESS, the alt-pop artist hailing from London, releases her three-track debut EP Landscapes. The EP includes previous releases ‘Landscapes’ and ‘Holy Flesh’, alongside brand-new single ‘Hooks’. A music video for ‘Hooks’ lands the same day, co-directed with the artist Ana Lemos. The video concept was to centre the visuals around a choreographed performance by Kate to create visuals that reflect the primal feelings within the track.

The ‘Landscapes’ EP pieces together an emotive narrative. PRIESTESS’ haunting, crystalline vocal wraps around swirling electronica and plunging basslines to describe silent rages, against harassment, toxic relationships and the environmental damage we are inflicting on our planet. The artistry and power behind each track is reinforced by three evocative music videos which beautifully express the energy and passion of the music.

Kate said about the ‘Landscapes’ EP “This debut EP came from many different spaces and angles emotionally. The name of the title track became an embodiment for the Landscapes of feeling that it was written within. Stitching together a mix of moments in time, whilst I was going through different experiences. It is also representative of how my work has an intrinsic connection to nature and the mirroring of ourselves within its cycles of death and rebirth.”

She continued to talk about the Lead single ‘Hooks’ “This track was written about my experience within an abusive relationship and the relatability I felt about people that ‘go back’ to their partners even when they know it’s unhealthy and bad for them. This experience was one that was very hard for me to extricate myself from and I felt it was like an intoxicating monster that had its hooks in me making it very hard to leave.”

PRIESTESS was formed in London by Kate Fleur Young. Priestess conjures up images of Nature’s ancient esoteric energy fused into an Alt-Pop world. Kate – at the creative helm and heart teams with producers James Mottershead and Oli Kilpatrick. Haunting melodies, sibylline harmonies and visceral lyrics are woven together by threads of hope. Illuminating them against a backdrop of dark beats, bass and lush electronic landscapes. Celebrating transformation and self-expression through the ritual of music their collective sound has influences such as FKA Twigs, Fever Ray, Massive Attack and Little Dragon. The result is an arresting electronic sound filled with deep sensuality and intuition.

Support for PRIESTESS continues to gather pace. With plaudits coming in from the likes of Wonderland, CLASH, CMU, Get In Her Ears and M Magazine to name but a few, it’s clear that PRIESTESS is ready to stake her claim on the music scene with her powerful representation of dark electronic pop.

Like walking through Wonderland, French-Candian artist Super Plage’s music video for his latest single, ‘Forêt Magique’, exudes child-like joy; the flamboyant musician and his minions are recruiting listeners to join their legion of fun, inviting us to become a part of their magic.

Stream / Download: Super Plage – ‘Forêt Magique’

Light-hearted and playful, the single strives to embody Super Plage’s central concept: “This song was inspired by a crazy trip to a festival where the music and the play of lights hidden in the forest completely bewitched us to create a magical moment during these scorching nights. It evokes dance, glitter and love in the river.”

The record ripples with psychedelia, shuttling listeners down a rabbit hole of light and sound. We plummet further and further, past whirlpools of kaleidoscopic imagery, clouds of candyfloss, and geometric nostalgia before landing in the artist’s imagination. Like Super Plage’s French, the blends between verses and choruses sound fluent, making for a single that falls gently on the ears.

Three-time JUNO-Award nominated alternative/soul singer-songwriter Nuela Charles released her incredible new single and music video for “Top of The World” via AWAL.

“’Top of the World’ was written with Breagh MacKinnon about this notion of dumbing yourself down for the benefit of others, instead of being the main character in your own life. The production by Matt Parad (Selah Sue, Will Joseph Cook, Catie Turner) definitely gives this song summer anthem vibes,” said Nuela Charles. “I wanted to write a song that was celebrating me, and my awesomeness, and I think everyone can relate to that. We are all unique and special and amazing in our own ways – so let’s celebrate that!”

The music video, directed by Tatiana Zagorac and Nuela Charles, showcases Nuela’s fun personality as she exudes joy and authenticity.

Although super simple in nature, I think videos like that are way more likely to have people watch them. A light-hearted and fun video is so re-watchable and I think it really endears people to an artist,” said Tatiana Zagorac, music video director.

Nuela is known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence. Born in Kenya, and raised in Switzerland, Canada and the Bahamas before settling full-time in Canada, Nuela’s music is infused with her multicultural upbringing, giving a fresh and diverse flair to her sound.

Over the last few years, Nuela has brought her distinct voice to various stages, having performed at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, London, UK, and at the uber-coveted “School Night” by personal invitation by tastemaker and LA’s KCRW radio host Chris Douridas. She has also shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada’s musical icons including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden and Stars.

This year the SOCAN Foundation announced Nuela as a winner of the second annual Her Music Awards, in which she received a grand prize of $5,000 during a virtual event on February 25. The Her Music Awards celebrate and support female-identifying, mid-career Canadian music creators who are on the verge of taking their creative careers to the next level.

Nuela has amassed over 4 million career streams to date. With coverage from American Songwriter, Earmilk, and FADER, and placements on hit shows such as Jane the Virgin, Tiny Pretty Things, House of Lies, The Order and Finding Carter, Nuela is ready to release more of her fiery brand of cinematic soul.

This just in: The Burma have taken to the rooftop in their new music video for their latest single ‘Sleepers’, out via The Burma Music. Overlooking the city, the trio jam out amongst the clouds.

Stream/ Download: ‘Sleepers’

Complete with suits, ties, and red carpets, the video is a luxurious visual experience. Formal, yet casual, the band creates a fun scene, performing in smart outfits at an unusual venue. It is as if the band slipped away from a stuffy award ceremony to do what they love best: make good music. On top of the world, literally, The Burma performs their single, which tells of climbing out from the bottom.

Looking back at one’s mistakes, it is easy to see where things went wrong. But moving forward is far more challenging. One must enter the unknown, often while stumbling and falling. This is a central human experience, which The Burma encapsulates in ‘Sleepers’.  The video drives home the message that no matter your position, whether you are on the second or fourth floor, you can find your way up.
