Maryze previously announced her debut LP 8 with a stormy-sweet queer nightclub-ready banger “Experiments”, followed by this she would share song ”Emo”.

Emo is the song Maryze always wanted to write to her high school boyfriend. It tells the tale of a love story turned toxic when you realize the person you thought you knew never really cared. “Did you ever listen to the songs I sent to you?” she asks repeatedly, sounding hurt and angry that her ex never took the time for things that meant something to her. She’s at a point where she’s checked out and numb, no longer fighting for a relationship that isn’t working anymore. The vibes are emo/rock/punk with vocal inspiration from Avril Lavigne and Paramore, bass tones emulating Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz (Maryze’s longest-standing crush that her ex used to make fun of her for liking, calling the band lame), and a nod to Green Day’s tremolo guitar effect from “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”.

“I made the song with producer and long-time collaborator Solomon K-I (who is featured on guitar),” Maryze shares. “We actually met playing in an indie rock band 10 years ago and our former drummer Graeme McDonald is featured on live drums.”

Consequence of Sound added it to their Song of the Week roundup, noting: “Throughout “Emo,” Maryze appropriately gets her vengeance, cranking up the volume and launching into a nostalgic, ‘90s era alt rock chorus. It’s an introduction to the singer’s grittier side while still remaining catchy and unique, and it demonstrates Maryze’s urgent need to stand up and be heard.”

A blast from the past, JONDOE’s latest single ‘Lost Your Mind’ will have all former ‘90s youth and  Gen z’s tapping their feet along with its undeniably engrossing beat and rhythm. Released via Aaki Records today, this single is a classic hit in our books. Incorporating the magical funk appeal and production elements of Detroit and Chicago house into this vibrant track, one can easily confuse this track with a party favourite from yesteryear.

Stream / Download: ‘Lost Your Mind’

The producer elaborates on his love for house music and its stylistic origins: My latest single is inspired by the House of Detroit and Chicago for the energy it conveys, but also by the UK scene for the rhythms and the mix of genres it allows. I wanted to infuse this spirit into the single and give a bit of “Club / House 90” colour as well as current styles with “sub” basses or other elements such as “congas”. The choice of the title “Lost Your Mind” was to translate this feeling

that electronic music gives us of “letting go” by letting your mind get lost in the rhythm of the sound. A “common and unifying” feeling between the DJ and the Dancefloor in my opinion…”

Definitely a fitting homage to this iconic time in electronic music history, JONDOE unveils a track that honours the laidback and feel-good mood of this era. Whether you were club-hopping or wearing diapers around the ‘90s, one can appreciate the nostalgic groove this track embodies.

From a static bliss emerges Calcou with his latest single, ‘Below’ released just last week via MFRD+C. The single pairs jazzy influences with ethereal voices but the unmistakable uplifting tone is what consistently carries it all. The single follows the release of both ‘Above’ and ‘Beyond’, paving the way for Calcou’s upcoming EP, Places which will be released mid-May, just in time for the summer months to roll around in the Northern Hemisphere.

Stream /Download: ‘Below’

‘Below’ reflects Calcou’s background as a professional jazz pianist while still incorporating rolling house beats that leave space for the imagination to stretch its legs. If you have a moment, we’d encourage you to take a quick gander at his Instagram page which contains some carefully selected images to present the musician’s artistic style in a new dimension. Whether it be audio or visual, Calcou seems like one to keep an eye on for his creative works.

The producer tells us about his latest single: “This time I tried to explore space – musically, but also in a broader sense as a feeling of restriction. By leaving certain musical decisions to algorithms, I tried to overcome these restrictions with playfulness and randomness, acknowledging the fact that control seems like an illusion now more than ever. The drums in ‘Below’ circle around a field recording I took when I was walking along the stony beach of Fécamp in Northern France. The vocal elements are from my friend Julian Muller, a singer-songwriter based in the Bay Area in California. Most of the musical elements in ‘Below’ are samples of my own recordings. When things get wobbly and detuned, scattered by slicing or granular synthesis, I get this feeling of innovation and discovery, something nobody else will be able to recreate, even myself, except for that one little lucky moment in time and space.”
