Avant-pop multi-instrumentalist Chong the Nomad (Alda Agustiano) teams up with West Coast singer-songwriter Laureli for a blissful, spaced out RnB excursion on ‘No Pulp’, lifted from the new ‘Kitsuné America: West Coast Edition’ compilation featuring exclusive tracks from hotly tipped artists in and around California.

Alda says: “Laureli and I have always wanted to collaborate, and when she sent the demo vocals for “No Pulp” I immediately latched on to it. She has a spectacular way of writing pop grooves that are both infectious and engaging. Writing alongside her and Rogét Chahayed was a much needed challenge in my career, it made me really dive deep as a producer and arranger. Originally I had a more heavy and complex instrumental, but I decided in the end to focus more on balancing Laureli’s voice with a sweet pop r&b groove, while still adding my own twist to the style.”

Every year, Kitsuné Musique takes a fresh look at American culture to handpick a selection of artists, introducing them to the world. As always, there are no limits in genre: only the perpetual hunt of the talents that are shaping tomorrow’s soundscape.

After its instalment in New York with the opening of the Maison Kitsuné store and Café Kitsuné, the Parisian brand travels to the west coast and announces the opening of a new store in Downtown Los Angeles. To celebrate, Kitsuné Musique narrows its sharp radar to target the Californian music scene and curating this year’s selection of ones to watch acts.

Hailing from Los Angeles, LOMELI and his track ‘Life And Echo’ is kicking off the journey, as Carter Reeves joins the party with his road-trip must-have ‘These Days’, released earlier on the label. As Kitsuné Musique always brings up old friends for the trip, the indie poppers Pink Skies also appears on the compilation. As we dive deeper into the musical adventure, there are some new faces to meet up down the road such as Los Angeles darling Haiva Ru, and celestial wanderer SAVI MINDS.

The compilation will unveil six to seven hidden gems from the hottest West Coast based artists of the moment. First stop is Kowloon mysterious universe, brought up by his soothing yet complex delivery on ‘Hurt’. Next up, is an exciting debut journey to ‘Mars’ courtesy of Luc De La Croixx, before an unexpected turn into Dot’s cutting edge beats on ‘User’

As the exploration continues there are also great collaborations to be found: the multi-faceted crew Real Bad Man team up with Genevieve Artadi on their debut collaborative single ‘Kill The Lie’ Delia Dane previously featured on last year Kitsuné America’s issue is back again with a soulful delight with ALETNA, and the anti-pop bop of rising Asian American producer / songwriter Chong the Nomad together with the oceanic and lush vocals of Laureli.

Released on heavy duty vinyl coupled with exclusive artwork, ‘Kitsuné America: West Coast Edition’ is out 14th May through Kitsuné Musique.

Alt-pop singer MOA addresses struggle with bipolar disorder on latest song

‘Bad Things’ is an alt-pop anthem depicting the unfolding of a manic episode. With an ominous bass and eclectic drums, the track outlines the exhilarating yet terrifying reality of one of the phases of bipolar disorder. MOA’s characteristic vocals and honest lyrics bring us to the breaking point by illustrating the very core of the sensation, here portrayed as another being pulling her in: ”Now the noise is just too much / it’s digging into my skin and / I’m on the floor / But she wants more”.

MOA’s second single is a truthful insight into the world of mania as well as a fearless statement on an, even now, stigmatized condition. With catchy melodies and strong vocal hooks, ’Bad Things’ transforms multilayered mental health issues into a relatable story of an evening devoured by the urges of the part of you warring against logic and calm: ”When the light’s gone I can’t trust myself / When the sun’s down, become someone else”.

MOA’s music is an enchanting merge of sickly sweet pop and fearlessly provocative punk. The style and lyrics derive from a life of complex mental struggles, landing her in a world of ecstatic highs and sinister lows. As a result, the self appointed ’Sertraline Queen’ started using her experiences with bipolar disorder to her advantage, and has spent the last year assembling a line of indisputable alt-pop pieces, discussing everything from female empowerment to mental health. With a peculiar mind and a thirst for peril, she is the anti hero the pop world has been waiting for.

Swedish born MOA is based in London, where she has been honing her craft since a young age. She left Sweden for the thrill of the suburban capital of the UK, but brought with her the ferociousness of the Scandinavian winters.

April 30, 2021 Composer Mattia Cupelli does not conform with ambient song ‘MONOLITH’

Composer Mattia Cupelli does not conform with ambient song ‘MONOLITH’

Incorporating ambient quirks into their sound, Mattia Cupelli creates the scene for undiscovered mystical spaces and people. His latest single ‘MONOLITH’ starts off with an ominous tone that lingers, building tension throughout the duration of listening to the track. One might think what could this all mean. There is no foretold story with this song, yet I feel like I have been overcome with emotion that can only be described as inquisitive to what this could mean for this music producer.

Stream/ download: ‘MONOLITH’

We hope that ‘MONOLITH’ ‘s overall arc will come to light with Cupelli’s upcoming album release titled RUINS via MC Records, in July. The producer was born in Rome, Italy which is known for its historic landmarks. Italy is less likely known for its impoverished cities and landscapes that are still in existence. Maybe he could have been inspired by these once desirable destinations and formed an electronic narrative around the feelings of being forgotten?

Whatever this young producer was inspired by it has got our attention more than we dare to have imagined. Not compromising his ideal sound to fit a specific genre tick off box, Mattia creates worlds that one cannot think of when you feel the pressure to conform.

April 30, 2021 Ambient composer Matthias Puech announces forthcoming album

Ambient composer Matthias Puech announces forthcoming album

After the exploration of snowy mountains of Alpestres, released on Hands in the Dark in 2018, French composer Matthias Puech ventures into new territories, sketching a cartography of the invisible where the journey, in chiaroscuro, is announced as a rite of passage. A Geography of Absence, as introspective as unpredictable, immerses the listener into a unique sensory whirlwind where organic matter becomes almost palpable. A researcher in theoretical computer science and an engineer at GRM, Matthias Puech constructs a dialog between synthetic music and field recording, capturing sounds that surround him and creating his own sonic language with the help of synthesizers he designs and develops; notably the Oscillator Ensemble and the Tapographic Delay, made by the American company 4ms.

A Geography of Absence retraces an inner journey where the physicality of sound leads the listener into an initiatory tunnel filled with apparitions, ghosts, visions. With sound oscillations as a navigational map, we progress, step by step, through the meanders of an unknown world, dazzled by the prospect of a new synthetic horizon, an electronic biotope teeming with life and incarnations. Playing with time, space and matter in an approach similar to that of musique concrète, Matthias Puech combines ambient and noise, floating sounds and electroacoustic experimentations, thus shaking up our listening perspective, which finds itself walking through a parallel universe, strata after strata, sequence after sequence.
