Def.fo shares phased out psych-rock anthem ‘Play It Cool’

Psychedelic Rock Singer-songwriter Def.fo recently released ‘Play It Cool’, on the 1st of September. Inspired by the likes of Tame Impala, ‘Play It Cool’, is a stunning slice of retro induced psychedelic rock with a clear contemporary edge. Based in Liverpool, the son of a famous record producer, Tom Powell aka Def.fo has been honing his songwriting from an early age. Mixed by Roy Merchant (Omar, M.I.A, Basement Jaxx) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Kasabian, The Red Hot Chili Peppers), it’s a track with no shortage of capable collaborators.

Featuring in-your-face drums and reverberated vocals, the star of the show is the phaser rich guitar sound that is gritty while still maintaining its loose psychedelic sound. Its lo-fi and loud, riding the line between old and new. However, the true essence of ‘Play It Cool’ lies in its message— a pertinent and poignant response to a culture engrossed in Social Media and Technology. Serving as a reminder to stand at attention, and tune out the noise around us.

The music video accompanying the single is a captivating ode to the iconic Tarantino/Tony Scott film, True Romance. Featuring an exciting escape to Mexico after a successful heist from the Hollywood wardrobe department, two lovers and a Cadillac break down, as the bonnie and clyde duo find solace in a garage, engrossed in love for a fleeting moment in time.

August 4, 2023 Whammyboy releases new and catchy Electro-Pop single ‘Chop It’

Whammyboy releases new and catchy Electro-Pop single ‘Chop It’

“Space-Pop” pioneer Whammyboy is back with another incredibly feel good track in ‘Chop It’, out on the 4th of August via Gems (Warner Music Norway). After his single ‘Heart’ received support from BBC Radio 1’s Future Artists Show, he’s gone on to play shows in both England and Scandanavia, with an EU and UK tour coming up in Autumn.

His fourth single, ‘Chop it’ is a befitting name for a song that is full of glitchy, chopped sounds and melodies. It’s incredibly fresh and modern, yet it manages to sound nostalgic, with an almost Disco-like beat and rhythm section underpinning the ever-modern synths and effects. His vocals are clean and extremely catchy as they float over a bouncing offbeat bass that hops on-and-on throughout the track. It’s the type of song you leave on repeat. It’s pop music for both humans and aliens.

Whammyboy had this to say: “It’s called that (Chop It) basically because I’m chopping some sounds…it’s very literal. The technique was inspired by Daft Punk, production-wise. But then it turned into something else, thanks to the offbeat bass from my childhood again. It really has me in its grip! With the lyrics, they’re very kind of vague, expressionistic kind of lyrics.”

Having recently performed at Piknik i Parken in Oslo in June, Whammy Boy  will be bringing his eclectic electro-pop sound to Pstereo in Trondheim and Reeperbahn Festivals in Germany in August and September followed by a EU and UK tour in October. Look out for the release of his debut EP “Space Pop Vol. I” on the 8th of September.

Klay Cartier ventures past genre with ‘Good For Nothin’’

Klay Cartier is an emerging artist who dabbles in the deep end, where the borders between genres have evaporated into mist. His latest offering, a percussion-heavy (or should I say heavy percussion) single titled ‘Good For Nothin’’, showcases his ability to veer off into new lanes without changing course.

To this end, he shared: “I recorded and worked on this song over a year ago. I knew I wanted to step out of my wheelhouse like I usually do, and it pushed me to make this incredible song. I took aspects from R&B, Pop, Rock, and Latin genres and mashed them together to create this electrifying experience for the listener.”

Signed with Kult Klassic Studios, his latest offering is a bare-bones production. This is not to say that it is by any means sparse, but rather that the focus on the raw physicality of the drum rhythms mixed with Cartier’s unblemished voice makes for an essential and directed work of art.

Hailing from Puerto Rico, R&B duo COASTCITY has released their new single ‘Afterlife’, a Latin-flavoured record brought to life with the help of Venezuelan artist FABRO. The track was born in an unforgettable session in the city of Buenos Aires. Toeing the line between dark and romantic, the song tells of love continuing into death, extending passed the mortal confines of one lifetime.

‘Afterlife’ is a minimal production that spotlights the vocals. With retro hues akin to the early 2000s scene, bringing forward aspects of Christina Aguilera, the team of musicians add a splash of pop appeal in the lane of The Weeknd to create something mellow yet emotive for fans to soak up.

The artists let us in, saying: “”Afterlife” is the continuation of our last song “Futuro”, its the new Latin R&B sound that bilingual, rhythmic and emotional. It’s COASTCITY’s first time collaborating with FABRO who is an up and coming artist out of Buenos Aires Argentina.”
